Do Not Forget To Fly - “Indian Governors must be accessible to all,” says Gandhiji. -Bireshwar, India, 1947.
Freedom came on August 15, 1947, and found Gandhi trying to heal the terrible wounds that the communal hatreds fanned by narrow self-interest had inflicted on the nation. He established his headquarters in Calcutta, centre of the worst orgies of senseless bloodshed. His daily prayer meetings were exhortations to the nation to remember its unity. He also advised the new State Governors appointed by the Congress Government at the Centre to shed the pomp and isolation associated with their office in British times and to function as true servants of the people.
